Confounded

So stupefied, with ample fluster, late,

Confusing silence, teach, interpret, spell,

Encamped, surrounded, leaving what to tell:

An empty lot to build, to conjugate.

Now throwing driest desert dust–dilate,

Small crumbles of the stones of ancient wells,

Once brimmed with tears of sky, therein to dwell–

Upon this head, now torrid, parched, sedate,

Upon this tongue, now bitter; salt; now sweet,

Upon these cracked lips, their fate to plunge!

Despise, deplore, revile, regret, expunge,

Desire to hate, desire, disown, excrete–

Alas, no answer, good or bad; the lunge:

To Hate! To Scorn!–but tiny light, concrete.
